Most annoying though, is that when a colour from the colour palette is used, editing that same colour doesn't result in the canvas being updated to reflect that colour change. The GUI is static and cannot be adjusted at all. Layer opacity controls are primitive and block the workflow.

The layers lack any blend mode, and can't even be dragged in the layer stack. It doesn't seem to have a proper indexed colour palette, and the onion skinning is way too basic with no controls. I'd suggest giving it a go and see if it works for you: Īfter trying Piskel, I can't really recommended to the OP. If I want to do some pixel-ing on my lunch break at work I can do that.

If I'm working on my desktop and the GF wants to watch a film I can save, then grab my laptop and continue on the sofa. Main reason I've grown to favour it though is because as a browser based web app and with private online storage I can work on it from pretty much any device. Its not quite as feature rich as say Aesprite, but it does have layers, onion skinning and a replace colour tool, so covers the key tools you're asking for. Most my pixel work gets done in Piskel now. Hexels had some weird defualt behaviours but was ok on the whole. Photoshop got a bit annoying, there are a bunch of defualt settings you have to change to get it to respect pixel art and I do a lot of other work with it, so switching these back and forth regularly just got on my nerves.Īesprite was probably the most feature rich and was very dedicated to pixel art. Hexels 2 is my pixel art hygge.I've tried Aesprite, Photoshop, marmoset hexels and Piskel. I’ve only scratched the surface here, obviously. Sure, there are prescribed standard dimensions for characters and backgrounds, but being able to subdivide grids after the fact allows for richer images, and lots of wiggle room - something that we, beginners, could use. I love that I can adjust my project dimensions and grid subdivisions as I work. But I’m getting there, a tiny step at a time. What a talented artist can do in a few minutes, I struggle with from morning, till the wee hours of the next day, often with nothing to show for it. I’ve been able to translate imagined characters and scenes into actual pixel art on this app. Walk before you run.Īnimation, which can be done from within Hexles, is a whole new can of worms I choose not to open just yet. These artists make it look easy, so don’t bite off more than you can chew or you’ll end up frustrated like I did. I also pored over Deniella Zeman’s beautifully shaded art, and Mira Karouta’s fascinating pieces. Just a word of warning.
